November 1995 came, Taylor was almost 2 ½ years old and I was 8 months pregnant when Tony’s father was admitted to a Kansas City hospital to have heart related surgery. All his children and most of their wives gathered in the waiting room during this time.

The night before, I had scurried around the house, trying to pack things that I or the baby would need while sitting for hours with nothing to do. At one point Tony asked what I was looking for. I had not wanted to pack a lot of things and I replied that I was looking for a few things that Taylor hadn’t seen in a while and keep his interest while we waited.

Within a few minutes, I had returned to put something in my purse and found 4-5 rubber jacks and a rubber ball. They would definitely be something Taylor had not seen because I didn’t even know where they had come from. They seemed a bit familiar, but with my mind on my father-in-law, and spending the day at the hospital, I couldn’t just place them.

It wasn’t until the next morning in the rush to get everyone out of the house and on the road for the 1 hour drive to the hospital in Kansas City that it dawned on me. The Jacks had been among the items I had given Sallie as a birthday gift several months earlier. I had wrapped all the items up in a single box and left it in the nursery in the old house. When we moved I brought it along and put it in the nursery of the new house.

Excited that she had not only opened her gift but shared her toys, I was excited to check the giftbox when we got home later that night from Kansas City.

As it happened, I forgot all about it and although I saw the box that night, in its usual place when I laid Taylor down for the night, it looked the same. It had not looked like it was opened and didn’t jog my memory as to what may have taken place early that morning.

Shortly after the Birth of my second son on New Years Eve day, I began a daycare in our home which was in full swing by the end of January. I and another woman took care of 12 children. At the end of each day, we made sure toys were picked up, the carpets were vacuumed and everything was back in its place.
