Jennifer, Jerry, Sherri and I arrived at the house and made sure the cameras were all set up before Tony arrived. A short time after that Tony dropped off Debra and her things and having brought her video camera and tripod, she went upstairs to set it up in the front bedroom.
I can't remember what her distraction was, but she left the room for a few minutes, and when she returned to start the camera, it was in a demo mode. She called me, because she didn't really know what had happened to the camera in her absence. We both knew that the demonstration mode doesn't just come up when the camera is turned on. When reviewing the tape from her camera, I had turned it on and hit record. Then I told her there was no way that just came up. Someone had apparently been pushing buttons.
In an EVP from those particular moments, Joanna in her motherly but stern voices says "Pauly". One of those single words your mom says that means so much more than just the word it represents. It means knock it off, wait till we get home, you'll be grounded for a week, I'll tell your dad and it really means all those things just by the way it is said. She knew who had been playing with those buttons. Look for this EVP in the case file for this investigation: "Pauly"
After we got Debra's camera set up we again returned to the living room downstairs and visited until Tony came in a little later. He had driven around for a while getting up his courage and nerve to re-enter the house.
This was the night I wanted Joanna to know that we knew her name. I thought it might help if he asked, but he didn't want to talk to her that way. I think I asked for the attention of those at the house, and then I said, "Joanna Barnes, I know you are here. I am NOT asking. I already know". When reviewing the tapes you can hear her say, "all right, (short pause) help me". About the same time someone had noticed that Tony had been scratched.
Knowing that there was a possibility that this might happen, I had contacted a psychic couple, Louann and Danny, who had been to the house with us on a trip on March 19th, 2005. The idea of using them as leverage to keep Joanna in line, came from some of the EVP we listened to and recorded on that visit. I had talked with them to check if using them was possible during the night of Tony's visit. They had agreed and had my cell phone number. If there was a problem occurring at their home while we were at the Sallie house with Tony; all they had to do was call. I later asked if they had noticed any activity the night of our investigation. Louann reported back, that there was nothing going on, and they had kept their eyes open all evening. In fact she said their house was extremely quiet, and they wondered if their regulars had also taken off for the evening.
When I originally called to talk with Louann about using them to control Joanna, Louann told me her daughter had been complaining about a spirit woman hanging around. Her daughter didn't like her very much, but since she hadn't seen what her daughter saw, then she wasn't sure who it may have been.
Back to the night of the investigation, I went into the kitchen and said I wanted to talk to her. I told her that hurting people wouldn't be tolerated and explained that I didn't want to see anyone hurt and that was only a part of why I was so disappointed with what had happened. I continued to talk to her very calmly, stating that I truly want to find a way to help her, but in the meantime I wanted to see that she was trying to help herself. Maybe she felt there was no hope, but I didn't and she had she not yet seen my determination.
While still standing in the kitchen I thought I heard her growl. It seemed to come from the corner, and then I heard the snapping sound. Holding one camera with my headset attached I asked who was with me. I knew I wasn't alone and felt they weren't either. I heard something again. Yes, there had been a growl or hiss type noise, but I thought I had heard another "little" voice too. So, I said, "I believe I may have heard you but it isn't quite loud enough".
