Report by Renae Leiker :
Friday April 29 2005 my husband called from work and while talking to him over the phone I heard someone lift the handset of a phone in the house. I could hear a couple of birds upstairs now coming through the phone. They were screaming and I could definitely hear them through the phone.
My husband asked what that click was and why I picked up the other phone. I said it wasn’t me but I am on my way upstairs right now. I told him it was ok it wasn’t anyone that had broken in I was sure about that.
Two of our dogs weigh 120 plus and they were inside. That reduces the chance it was a human intruder by pretty much 100%, at the very least I would have known someone else was in the house. I looked at the first phone I came to in the kitchen and it was not on.
As I turned the corner to the hallway I heard the phone hang up. I went to check one more cordless phone and one with a cord but I couldn’t tell that either one had been bothered. I hung up right after that and said “hi, is that your way of letting me know that you know we are coming”?
There had been a couple of little hints that I was having visits but each one is so easy to dismiss until you realize that these things didn’t happen before you started going to this house. Oh but it is so easy to explain this as just being more aware or any number of excuses I had used.
Leaving home just seemed strange that next day. My husband said after I leave for the Sallie house he wanted to mow the lawn and treat the yard.
For some reason I changed my mind about the best way to get to Atchison. Not just once but several times. After I missed one turn I decided maybe I was supposed to go the way I was headed. As it turned out my third choice of roads had a “road closed” sign across it.
The second sign on this road said bridge out so I turned around and tried to find the next best way to get to the Sallie house. No idea how I missed it but the entire trip to Atchison was a twilight zone experience.
I couldn’t get the cell phone to work for a time and that didn’t surprise me so much as when I did finally get a signal it wouldn’t complete a call. I tried to call home and remembering my husband was outside, I let the phone ring so the answer machine would pick up. I got my own answering message yet when I called back a little while later he said that the answering machine had not kicked on. How can you call and get your own message without it picking up??
