Stone Foundation900 viewsThis photo is of the foundation area of the back of the house. Early on, and from the eastern most interior wall of the basement, these areas were seen and thought to be entrances to the underground railroad (which was active in Atchison so many years ago). Later it was discovered that those access areas were seen from the houses exterior and therefore could not be tunnels underground.
When a masonry worker was consulted, it was revealed that in early settlements it was often the case that people would build the basement of there house, and live in it until they could afford or complete the rest of the house.
